Who Won The 2024 IIHF Women's World Ice Hockey Championship?
The 2024 IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship ended today after competition between 10 national teams since April 3rd in Utica, New York. This was the 23rd edition of the tournament, usually held in every non-Olympic year. And, this was the first time that Utica has hosted, although the United States hosted four previous times (Lake Placid 1994, Minneapolis 2001, Burlington 2012, and Plymouth 2017).
Teams Canada and United States have split the 22 titles, with the Canadians leading 12-10, despite the Americans finishing on top in 2023. Finland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Czech Republic (Czechia) are the only other national teams to make a podium, with the Czechs earning bronze in the last two editions. And the Canadians and the Americans met in the final for the 22nd time (2019 the rare exception, when Team Finland made the final), with Team Canada taking the title in a thriller 6-5 (overtime) game to avenge their 0-1 loss in the earlier group stage. In the bronze medal match, the Finns won 3-2 (shootout) over Team Czech Republic to reach the podium for the first time since 2021, and denying the Czechs a third straight bronze. Congrats to the 2024 medalists! Complete results can be found online at iihf.com.
