What: The FIBA Oceania Men and Women Championships

Where: Melbourne, Australia, Tauranga & Wellington, New Zealand (see logo)

When: August 15 - 18, 2015


Competing: Australia and New Zealand

More: Both the men and the women are playing a home-and-away two game format; the winner of each series by point differential earns the Oceania qualification to Rio 2016. The other moves on to the Olympic Qualifying Tournament next year.

Fun Fact: Australia has always won the women's competition in its 17 years; while New Zealand has won the men's three times since 1971, most recently in 2009. The last time a third team entered was Fji, in the 2007 women's competition.

June 11:  European Women's Basketball Championship

What: EuroBasket Women 2015

Where: Seven cities across Hungary and Romania, with Budapest hosting the final round

When: June 11 - 28, 2015

Competing: Belarus, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Ukraine

More: This is the 35th edition of the Championship. Spain is the defending champion, having won their second-ever title in 2013.

Fun Fact: The Soviet Union is still the all-time medalist, with 22. Czechoslovakia is second at 15, with the first current nation at third with Bulgaria's 10 medals. (But Bulgaria hasn't won a medal since 1989)

September 27:  Women's Basketball World Championship

What: The FIBA World Championship for Women

Where: Istanbul and Ankara, TUR

When: September 27 - October 5, 2014

Competing: Angola, Australia, Belarus, Brazil, Canada, China, Cuba, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Korea, Mozambique, Serbia, Spain, Turkey, United States

More: This is the 17th edition of the Championships.  USA is the defending champions, and if successful in their defense, would add to their existing 8 titles.

Fun Fact:  Um, why don't they add a few teams and call this a 'World Cup', too?  A good goal for equality, FIBA...

August 30: FIBA Basketball World Cup

What: The FIBA Basketball World Cup

Where: Spain (6 cities, Madrid is the Championship game site)

When: August 30 - September 14

Competing: Angola, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Greece, Iran, Korea, Lithuania, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Senegal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, United States

More:  This is the 1st iteration of the event as a 'World Cup', whereas previously it was called a World Championship. The champion also earning 2016 Olympic qualification.

Fun Fact:  The next World Cup will be in 2019, five years later - so as to start a new every-4-year-cycle that does not coincide with football's World Cup.
