More: This is the ninth edition of the Games, started in 1979, and features competition in 14 sports, including athletics and swimming

July 10:  The Pan American Games

What: The XVII Pan American Games

Where: Toronto, Canada

When: July 10 - 26, 2015

More: Over 6,000 athletes from 41 nations across North, Central, and South Americas and the Caribbean are expected to compete in 36 sports.

Fun Fact: If the 45% projection holds up, the percentage of women in the total number of athletes will be a new high for any major multi-sport event. In another first, the Games are also expected to be carbon-neutral.

July 04:  The Pacific Games

Where: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

When: July 04 - 18, 2015

Competing: 24 countries, from the South Pacific region, including Australia & New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, and Tahiti

More: 28 sports to be competed, across traditional Olympic events plus regional favorites such as outrigger canoeing, netball, and bodybuilding.

Fun Fact: This is the first of 15 editions in which powerhouses Australia and New Zealand compete, albeit only in sailing, taekwondo, rugby, and weightlifting.

More: The biennial 'World University Games' will hold 272 events across 19 sports.

Fun Fact: Gwangju failed to win the 2013 bid (won by Kazan, Russia) and beat out Edmonton and Taipei for the rights to this year's.
