More: First held in 1987, the quadrennial event is considered the highlight prize in international rugby.

Fun Fact: The winner of the RWC receives the Webb Ellis Cup, named in honour of the sport’s folkloric founder, English schoolboy William Webb Ellis.

Where: (Japan) First and Second rounds - Hamamatsu, Hiroshima, Osaka, Toyama; Third round - Tokyo


When: September 08 - 23, 2015
Competing: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Egypt, Iran, Italy, Japan, Poland, Russia, Tunisia, United States, Venezuela


More: Held every four years, the World Cup acts as Olympic qualification and is a separate event from the World Championships and World League. The women's World Cup was held also in Japan in August.


Fun Fact: The top two teams will qualify for the Rio Olympics

August 22: Women's Volleyball World Cup

Where: Six cities across Japan

When: August 22 - September 06, 2015

Competing: Algeria, Argentina, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Japan, Kenya, Peru, Russia, Serbia, South Korea, United States

More: The round-robin tournament is used as qualification to the Olympics next year; the top two finishers will qualify.

Fun Fact: The event is held every four years; Italy won the 2011 edition with the USA second.

June 06: Women's World Cup

Where: Canada (six sites, with Vancouver hosting the final)

When: June 06 - July 05, 2015

Competing: Australia, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cote d'Ivoire, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United States

More: This is the seventh edition of the women's version of the World Cup. Despite making the podium in all previous six editions, the U.S. has only won this event twice, 1991 and 1999.  Japan is the defending champion.

Fun Fact: A remarkable eight teams - Cameroon, Costa Rica, Cote d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand - will be making their World Cup debuts this year.

Where: Australia and New Zealand (14 cities, with Melbourne, AUS hosting the final)

When: February 14 - March 29, 2015

Competing: Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, West Indies, Zimbabwe

More: Australia and New Zealand first hosted jointly in 1992. India and Sri Lanka finished 1st and 2nd in 2011.

Fun Fact: Originally, only ten teams were scheduled to compete (the ten full-time members of the ICC - but after widespread criticism, the field was re-enlarged to 14 as it was in 2011.
