More: The French Open is the second tennis Grand Slam event in the calendar year. The first 'French Open' was in 1891, with women's competition added in 1897 and invitations to non-French in 1925. The current Roland-Garros site was first used in 1928.
Fun Fact: The use of the site in 1928 was provided on the condition that the new stadium be named after a celebrated Stade Francais former member; the honor fell onto Roland Garros, most widely known as an aviator who died in combat in 1918.
