Fun Fact: Now held every four years, the event has had multiple names since its start in 1991: Women's Championship, Women's Gold Cup, and Women's World Cup Qualifying. Although now called 'Championship' again, its importance is still largely seen as the qualifiers for the World Cup, strongly evidenced by defending champion Canada declining participation, as they are World Cup hosts and already qualified.
