Ready for Battle

4/30/2020

View this post on Instagram

Remembering javelin champion Janis Lusis.

Outsports checks in with rower Robbie Manson at home in New Zealand.

Missed this at the start of the month, but a very belated happy birthday to judo legend Yoshihiro Ushida. And to another Olympic family centenarian...Slovenia's Marko Racic.

Skeleton racer Brendan Doyle goes public with his workouts.

COVID-19: Italian marathoner Francesco Perrone passed away at 90.

Max Whitlock: my eyes keep going to that little tuft of hair needing a slight trim.

A Little Roundup

Part of me is happy that the community is facing reality, but can we just have a moment to believe that Tokyo 2020 will happen?

At least John Coates believes...

A lot of buzz around these comments, but I don't read a lot of specifics. I'd point to the IOC itself for the "proliferation of sports events" with its rapid promotion of TV and youth-friendly sports like sport climbing and breakdancing.

United Wrestling unveils their own online game to engage fans.

The Australian Olympic Committee marks its 100th anniversary; good to see Peter Norman recognized.

That's now three Turkish women for London 2012 disqualified.

Cross-country skiing stalwart Lari Lehtonen announces his retirement.

Not the best of starts for the new acting president of weightlifting - a sport which needs no extra drama.

Michael Maze lets Mikkel Kessler take a peek.

Gus Kenworthy Offers Quarantine Perspective

4/28/2020

an alt version of "too hot to handle" where instead of 14 singles being paid $100k to not have sex for a month it's the whole world not allowed to have sex for a longer, undefined period of time, maybe 3 months? maybe a year? they receive no compensation

Olympic postponement: still lots of questions. For me, #1 is...what happens to my money?

Aleksander Aamodt Kilde went for a hike.

Oscar Husillos looks forward to summer training.

Brothers Gino and Mauro Caviezel make do for their gym workouts.

Track & field athletes aren't the only ones you can color in now, thanks to World Rowing.

Remember Leandro Barbosa? He has a coronavirus story from Brazil.

The Start of a Legend

On this day in 1920 at the Antwerp Olympics, Sweden's Gillis Grafstrom won the first of three straight men's figure skating titles. He'd eventually add a silver medal 12 years later in 1932 and along the way, establish a number of competitive positions, setting an artistic standard for figure skating for years to come.

A Little Roundup

Maybe we should all go to work for the IHF.

The Mack Horton vs. Sun Yang saga continues. IMHO, it should be the swimming world vs. Sun Yang...

Sydney McLaughlin goes glam in pink.

A little odd to have a team of the week honor when competition is quiet, but I'm always game to read up on these Norwegian beach volleyball favorites.

Katie Ledecky studies infectious diseases.

Olympic.org offers a quick profile on Ona Carbonell.

Now may be your chance to finally be a surfing judge.

From the world of judo, story of a Belgian in Sweden.

Oliver Dingley looks back and ahead to the Olympics.

Popular hurdler Aries Merritt hopes to continue until 2022.

A Little Roundup

Organizers announce that the annual Josef Odlozil Memorial athletics meet, scheduled for June 8 in Prague, will be held. It'll be interesting to see how this shortened event takes place and who participates. It usually does attract a handful of top names, but will this just be a token showcase for local athletes? And, will it actually still happen?

And, Bislett Games organizers bring us the "Impossible Games". If Warholm does set a world record, will it count in this exhibition setting?

But, meanwhile, the European Athletics Championships are finally cancelled.

Olympic costs: was there a concern there wouldn't be transparency?

Some European boxers were just one day away from qualification dreams.

James Hall remembers Shibuya.

With candidates likes these, it definitely won't be the Human Rights Games.

Paul Ruggeri: I certainly don't mind that he's double-dipping with this image.

"Celebrated and colorful" cyclist Eddie Dawkins calls it a career.

Nestor Abad gets philosophical, thankfully while shirtless.
