Who Won The World Women’s Curling Championship 2023?

Picture
The 2023 World Women's Curling Championship concluded today after nine days of competition in Sandviken, Sweden. The first women's championship was held in 1979; this has been the fourth time that Sweden has hosted, after Jonkoping 1985, Vasteras 1990, and Gavle 2004.

13 national teams qualified for the championship, including host Sweden, Japan, South Korea, Canada, United States, New Zealand (a first-time participant), Denmark, Switzerland, Scotland, Italy, Turkey, Germany, and Norway.

All 13 played a round-robin format phase, with the top six proceeding to the elimination rounds. In the end (no pun intended), Team Switzerland won its 10th world title, its fourth straight title, and eighth since 2012. A world championship dynasty!

Congratulations to the world champions! Complete results can be found online at worldcurling.org.

Who Won The 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships?

Picture
Beginning on March 15th, the 2023 IBA Women's World Boxing Championships ended today in New Delhi. This was the 13th edition of the women's championships since 2001, and the third time that New Delhi (and India) has hosted after 2006 and 2018.

Controversy certainly surrounded this edition. After the International Boxing Association announced that Russian and Belarusian athletes would be able to compete, and under their own national marks and flags - despite the general on-going ban in international sport, a wave of boycotts hit the tournament - including from Teams United States, Canada, Netherlands, Ireland, Poland, Norway, Lithuania, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland, and, of course, Ukraine.

And, that drama came alongside the IBA's announcement of its own Paris 2024 qualification outline, including using this tournament, despite the International Olympic Committee having already stripped the IBA of any authority in qualification.

Other controversies plaguing the tournament, aside from usual judging oddities, included (very) late disqualifications of two athletes for 'eligibility' failures and the politically-tinged withdrawal of Team Kosovo.

In the end, the tournament proceeded with a total prize purse of $2.4 million U.S. across its 12 weight categories, not all of which are to be included at Paris 2024. Host Team India scored four golds, while Team China finished with seven overall medals and Team Kazakhstan six. 20 nations had at least one.

Congrats to the official world champions. A quick photo gallery recap is below, and complete results can be found online at iba.sport.

Who Won The 2023 World Figure Skating Championships?

Picture
The 2023 ISU World Figure Skating Championships ended today in Saitama, Japan after four days of competition. The first-ever championships were held in 1896 for men's singles only, with women's competition started in 1906, pairs in 1908, and ice dance in 1952. This was the eighth time Japan has hosted, and the third time for Saitama (2014, 2019). The world championships have generally been held annually, including Winter Olympic years.

As usual, competition was held in the four core events of men's and women's singles, pairs, and ice dance, with 'small' medals also awarded for the top three performances in each's short and long programs. Of course, the key 'big' medals were for competition combining each short and long programs.

(p.s. Again, the Olympic event of Team Figure Skating was not included on the worlds' schedule. Why not? If it's worth Olympic inclusion, shouldn't it be featured at worlds? Then again...maybe it's not worth...oh well...)

Host Team Japan won three titles - including repeat men's and women's champions and a landmark pairs gold - to win the overall medal count. Teams USA, South Korea, Italy, Belgium, and Canada all also reached a podium at least once.

Congratulations to all the 2023 world champions! A quick photo gallery of the overall event winners is below. Find complete results online at wfc2023.jp or isu.org.

Who Won The 2023 ISU World Short Track Speed Skating Championships?

Picture
The 2023 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships ended today after three days of competition in Seoul. This was the 47th edition of the event since 1976 and the fourth-ever in South Korea (Jeonju 2001, Gangneung 2008, Seoul 2016).

Host Team South Korea entered the championships with the most-ever medals in event history. But the squad may feel disappointed in this year's performance, as it came in second on home turf in the overall medal count, with six behind Team Netherlands' eight overall. Park Ji Won won the only South Korean gold, in both the men's 1000 and 1500 meter races. Meanwhile, the Dutch swept the women's races, with Xandra Velzeboar winning four titles and Suzanne Schulting three - both totals including the Mixed Relay title. Teams Italy, China, Canada, and Belgium also made the final medal table with at least one podium finish.

Congratulations to all the winners! A quick photo gallery of the campions is below. Complete results of the championships can be found at shorttrack.sportresult.com.

Picture
The ISU World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships concluded today in Heerenveen, Natherlands after four days of competition. This is the second straight edition to be held in the Dutch city, and the 22nd edition of the individual race championships.

Competition was held across eight men's and eight women's events. As ever the favorite, home team Team Netherlands dominated the overall medal table with seven golds and 17 overall. Teenager Jordan Stolz becoming the first man to win three individual titles at one championship was a remarkable event highlight, while Davide Ghiotto won Team Italy's first-ever title. Cornelius Kersten's 1000m bronze was the first medal ever for Team Great Britain. Team Norway's Ragne Wiklund was a three-time individual medalist, while Thomas Krol, Bart Swings, Irene Schouten, Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, Jutta Leerdam, Miho Takagi, and Martina Sablikova all won two each.

Congratulations to all the winners! A photo gallery recap of the 2023 world champions is below. And, complete results can be found online at isu.org.
