Who Won The 2023 IIHF Men's Ice Hockey World Championship?The 2023 IIHF Men's Ice Hockey World Championship for ice hockey ended today in Tampere, Finland, concluding a tournament that had begun on May 12th and was co-hosted by Riga, Latvia. The two Baltic nations stepped up as co-hosts after original host plans for St. Petersburg were cancelled amidst the Russian war against Ukraine. This was the seventh time Tampere has helped host, and the third for Riga. This top Championship Division event featured 16 national teams: Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, and United States. Other men's ice hockey division world champions for 2023 included Team Great Britain (Division I, Group A), Team Japan (Division I, Group B), Team Spain (Division II, Group A), Team United Arab Emirates (Division II, Group B), Team Chinese Taipei (Division III, Group A), Team Kyrgyzstan (Division III, Group B), and Team Philippines (Division IV). In the end, Team Canada triumphed in the Championship Division, winning the gold medal 5-2 over Team Germany in the championship game. This is the 28th world championship gold for the Canadians in the men's tournament dating back to 1920. Team Latvia scored an impressive first-ever world medal, with a shock 4-3 overtime win over Team United States for the bronze medal. Congratulations to the world champions! Who Won The 2023 World Table Tennis Championships?The 2023 World Table Tennis Championships Finals ended today in Durban, South Africa after a tournament that started on May 20th. This was the 57th edition of the event, and it's only the second in Africa since Cairo 1939. Competition was held in five events: singles and doubles for both men and women, and mixed doubles. (Note: these championships alternate every other year with a separate team championships event.) Team China is the overall leader on the all-time medal table, with more than twice the medals - 419.5 - of second-place Team Hungary. And...Team China raked in the medals again, sweeping all golds and taking 12 of the 20 total medals available. Three Chinese were double champions across the singles and doubles events - Fan Zhedong, Sun Yingsha, and Wang Chuqin. Sun and Wang each added a third medal (bronze and silver, respectively).
