Longtime captain of USA men's football, Landon Donovan will make his final appearance for Team USA on October 10, in a friendly against Ecuador in Hartford. Your departure from the international scene wasn't smooth as you probably would have liked, Landon, but after setting USA records for goals and assists and after numerous memorable moments, you deserve a salute. Plus, you look like someone I know...
Led by Lena Petermann's lone goal early extra time, Germany won their 3rd U-20 Women's World Cup today, beating Nigeria in a repeat match-up and victory in the last Cup in '10. I'm guessing this sets the Germans up to be a longtime power still in women's football, especially since the USA didn't even make the semifinals. Led by star pitcher Yukiko Ueno, Japan’s softball team won its 2nd straight World Championship today, over USA 4-1 today in Haarlem. AUS won the bronze. Good for them. That said, though...that's the same top three order as the last Championships, and they account for 20 of the 27 medals total since 1986. Hard to get diversity in competitiveness when you're not on the Olympic calendar anymore, but here's hoping they figure it out. Greg Rutherford (GBR) is on a roll, as he is now currently the Olympic, Commonwealth, and European Champion in the men's long jump, after winning his first European title this past week in Zurich. Assuming he stays healthy, he's definitely the competitor with the target on his back in the World Championships next summer - the one major title missing for him. He also apparently has even more athletic goals - to compete in the Winter Olympics as well, using his track sprint speed as others have done to leverage into bobsled or skeleton. Martyn Rooney of Great Britain is new the 400m champion from this year’s European Athletics Championships in Zurich, after leading a British 1-2 ahead of Matthew Hudson-Smith for his 1st major international title. Rooney created a lot of buzz in Britain in 2006 with a remarkable debut at the Commonwealth Games that year, setting a new British junior record in the 400m, but had not been able to capitalize on his potential for a major international win, until this year. After a disappointing pair of fourth-place relay placements in the last two Olympics and a fourth-place in the individual Commonwealth 400m this year, Rooney passed on the relay this year to concentrate on a European title. That focus obviously paid off with the fastest time in Europe so far in 2014, and that first prominent gold. And, he re-established himself as the top 400m man on the team, overcoming the much-hyped Hudson-Smith, who has claimed Rooney as his idol in the sport. |
