My passion for the Olympics began in 1984, watching the Los Angeles Games on TV in wide-eyed wonder at the multicultural athleticism on display. One event that captivated me - still gives me a warm feeling - was the women's 400 meter hurdle final, in which Moroccan (!) Nawal El Moutawakel finished first in the Olympic debut for the discipline. And in a very close fourth was Pilavullakandi Thekkeparambil "P.T." Usha - a potential race favorite possibly felled by bad luck. for some reason, that so close finish out of the medals disappointed my root-for-underdog self. So, it was nice to see her name pop up, as the 'Golden Girl' of Indian athletics recently weighed in on the state of Indian athletics. (TLDR: underperforming) And, on a side note...happy belated birthday, P.T.!
