Monday Weekend Wrapup

Two big athlete news items that caught my eye over the weekend in A Little Roundup...

Olympic gymnast Kurt Thomas - who won the first world championship for the United States in 1978 - passed away at age 64. A 2003 inductee into the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame, Thomas also had two signature moves named after him, the "Thomas Flair" on the pommel horse and the "Thomas Salto" on the floor exercise.

Bahraini Salwa Eid Naser's provisional suspension for drug whereabouts violations got tongues wagging across the athletics world. As the reigning world champion in the women's 400 meters, she is is certainly the highest profile suspension of late. Her initial defense of "normalizing" three missed tests definitely doesn't help her public image cause...

Θέλω να μοιραστώ μαζί σας την πραγματική εικόνα που έχουν σήμερα οι Ολυμπιακές Εγκαταστάσεις του Αγίου Κοσμά. Αφορμή η χθεσινή ημέρα, που δυστυχώς δεν ήταν η εξαίρεση αλλά ο κανόνας, με τη βροχή να μας αναγκάζει να σταματήσουμε την προπόνηση μας στο κλειστό γυμναστήριο αφού η σκεπή πλέον δεν μπορεί να την κρατήσει εκτός. Νιώθω πραγματική θλίψη. Στεναχωριέμαι. Σκάω. Είναι αλήθεια ότι έχουμε καταφέρει να βγάζουμε πρωταθλητές και Ολυμπιονίκες κάτω από δύσκολες συνθήκες. Άνισες σε σχέση με τους συναθλητές μας από άλλες χώρες. Βγάζουμε αθλητές υψηλού επιπέδου παρά τους εξοπλισμούς που υστερούν σε σχέση με εκείνους άλλων χωρών. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει όμως ότι θα πρέπει να ξεχνάμε τα αυτονόητα. Η πραγματικότητα που βιώνουμε είναι το χειμώνα να γυμναζόμαστε σε μόλις 3-4 βαθμούς πιο πάνω από την εξωτερική θερμοκρασία και το καλοκαίρι αντίστοιχα, 3-4 βαθμούς πιο κάτω. Κάθε βροχή μας αναγκάζει να σταματάμε την προπόνησή μας και συχνά ο εξοπλισμός μας καταστρέφεται. Αμφιβάλλω πλέον για το πόσο θα κρατήσει η σκεπή από τις βροχές και δεν θα καταρρεύσει. Ξέρω την πραγματικότητα και ειδικά σήμερα που όλοι μας έχουμε σε μικρότερο ή μεγαλύτερο βαθμό επηρεαστεί αρνητικά. Καταλαβαίνω απόλυτα ότι υπάρχουν προτεραιότητες πιο σημαντικές από τον αθλητισμό, όπως είναι η υγεία και η στήριξη της εργασίας. Δεν μπορώ όμως παρά να σκέφτομαι ότι ο ερασιτεχνικός αθλητισμός χρήζει μιας διαφορετικής αντιμετώπισης. Χρειάζεται μια επανεκκίνηση και στον αθλητισμό. Θέλουμε την αυτονόητη βοήθεια για να μπορούμε να συνεχίζουμε να σηκώνουμε τη σημαία μας ψηλά και να κάνουμε υπερήφανους τους Έλληνες. Θέλουμε να συνεχίσουμε να εμπνέουμε τα μικρά παιδιά και να φέρουμε όσο γίνεται περισσότερα κοντά στον αθλητισμό. Χρειαζόμαστε την ελάχιστη στήριξη. Τις αυτονόητες υποδομές. Αυτές που θα μας επιτρέπουν απλά να προπονούμαστε σε φυσιολογικές συνθήκες.
