In 1921, Pierre de Coubertin, the 2nd president of the International Olympic Committee, announced that the 1924 Games in Amsterdam would be his last. And, on September 1, 1925 he formally did step down, replaced by Henri Baillet-Latour. Often credited as the founder of the modern Olympics, de Coubertin helped organize them after a long admiration of the ancient Greek games. His specific role is at times debated, but the Olympics today are a global sensation and fascination, and a platform striving to continue his idealized vision.
