Who Won The 2023 World Figure Skating Championships?
The 2023 ISU World Figure Skating Championships ended today in Saitama, Japan after four days of competition. The first-ever championships were held in 1896 for men's singles only, with women's competition started in 1906, pairs in 1908, and ice dance in 1952. This was the eighth time Japan has hosted, and the third time for Saitama (2014, 2019). The world championships have generally been held annually, including Winter Olympic years.
As usual, competition was held in the four core events of men's and women's singles, pairs, and ice dance, with 'small' medals also awarded for the top three performances in each's short and long programs. Of course, the key 'big' medals were for competition combining each short and long programs.
(p.s. Again, the Olympic event of Team Figure Skating was not included on the worlds' schedule. Why not? If it's worth Olympic inclusion, shouldn't it be featured at worlds? Then again...maybe it's not worth...oh well...)
Host Team Japan won three titles - including repeat men's and women's champions and a landmark pairs gold - to win the overall medal count. Teams USA, South Korea, Italy, Belgium, and Canada all also reached a podium at least once.
