Who Won The 2023 World Aquatics Championships?
75 (!) world titles were offered for the 2,392 (!!) athletes registered, across the six main disciplines of aquatics: diving, high diving, artistic swimming, water polo, swimming, and open water swimming. Spanning the history of the championships, Team United States is the all-time medal winner, followed by Team China.
And Team USA took the overall medal table at Fukuoka 2023 as well, with 44 to Team China's 40 and Team Australia's 30. 30 national teams won at least one medal across all disciplines.
Some of the highlights along the way? Katie Ledecky breaking Michael Phelps' individual career gold record while winning a sixth straight 800-meter title, Sarah Sjostrom setting a new mark in individual total medals, Kaylee McKeown and Leon Marchand each winning three individual titles, the eight world records (* below) set in swimming in the finals, Germany sweeping the open water individual races, and the near-complete dominance of Team China in diving, with four of its divers winning two golds each.
