Who Won The 2023 ISA World Surfing Games?
63 national teams and over 290 surfers participated in these championships. In addition to crowning men's and women's champions, the event also served as a Paris 2024 qualifier with four continental spots in each gender awarded Olympic qualification. Securing that qualification were Jordy Smith (Team South Africa), Kanoa Igarashi (Japan), Kauli Vaast (France), and Billy Stairmand (New Zealand) for the men, and Sarah Baum (South Africa), Shino Matsuda (Japan), Vahine Fierro (France), and Saffi Vette (New Zealand) for the women.
Both Igarashi and Fierro made their respective event finals, but neither would claim the championship in the end - each finishing in fourth place. Rather, Team Mexico's Alan Cleland won his first WSG title in the men's competition, and Team Brazil's Tatiana Weston-Webb did the same in the women's event. And, overall, it was a strong competition for Pan American surfers - claiming the first three men's and top two women's spots in the finals. And, Team Peru took the team title based on the overall performance of its surfers Lucca Mesinas and Miguel Tudela (who finished second and third in the men's event), with Alonso Correa, Sol Aguirre, Daniela Rosas, and Arena Rodriguez, narrowly beating out Team France.
