They Are The Champions: 2024 BMX Racing Worlds

5/18/2024

Who Won The 2024 UCI BMX Racing World Championships?

Picture
The 2024 BMX Racing World Championships ended today in Rock Hill, United States. This wasthe 27th edition of the UCI version of the championships since 1996, the second time the South Carolina city has hosted (2017), and the overall third time the event has been in the U.S., including Louisville in 2001. (Houston 2020 was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.)

Teams France and the U.S. led the all-time medal table with 112 and 104 overall medals, respectively, followed distantly by Team Netherlands' 55 ahead of the 2024 event. All three made the 2024 podium again, with Teams France and USA both winning two medals each across the men's and women's elite six podium places (Team Netherlands and Team Switzerland split the two silvers).

Three ended up a magic number, as both the men's and women's 2024 champions earned their third titles. Congratulations to the 2024 medalists! Complete results can be found online at uci.org.

Who Won The 2024 Nacra 17 Sailing World Championship?

Picture
The 2024 Nacra 17 World Championship ended today in La Grade-Motte, France after almost a week of sailing. This was the second time the commune has hosted the mixed gender multihull championship since 2013, after 2017's edition. The event also doubled with the European Championships for both the men's 49er and women's 49erFX skiff titles.

Teams France and Italy entered 2024 tied forthe most titles (four each), with Paris 2024-bound Italians Ruggero Tita and Caterina Banti the two-time defending champions.

And Tita and Banti took the title again, for their fourth world championship in all (2018, 2022, 2023, and now 2024). Is their Olympic title defense a lock now?

Congratulations to all of the 2024 medalists! Complete results and news can be found at nacra17.org.

Who Won The 2024 Thomas & Uber Cup Finals in Badminton?

Picture
The 2024 Thomas & Uber Cup finals for badminton ended this weekend after just over a week of competition in Chengdu, China. This was the 33rd edition of the men's team world championship (Thomas) and the 30th for the women (Uber). Since 1984, the two tournaments have been held together, and this was the first time that Chengdu has hosted.

Teams Indonesia and China entered 2024 as the most successful teams over the Cups' histories; the Indonesian men having won the event 14 times prior and the Chinese women 15. No other national team - other than the Chinese men's 10 - had won more than six titles.

In 2024, Team China's men closed the gap over their Indonesian rivals with a 3-1 win in the final for their 11th title. And with its 3-0 win, also over the Indonesians, in the women's final, Team China now currently holds the combined Sudirman Cup, and the Thomas & Uber Cup.

Congratulations to all the medalists! A quick recap is below, and complete results can be found online at bwfthomasubercups.bwfbadminton.com.

Who Won The 2024 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship?

Picture
The 2024 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship concluded today after eight days of competition in Ostersund, Sweden. The first mixed doubles championship - for teams of one man and one woman each - was held in 2008; this is the third time Sweden has hosted (2016, 2018), and the second for Ostersund ('18).

In addition to the host Team Sweden, the tournament featured 19 other national teams, from Australia, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and United States. Team Switzerland entered this tournament as the most-titled champion, with seven of the previous 15 titles.

Teams played a round-robin format phase in two groups, before the elimination rounds began. In the end (pun intended!), Team Sweden's Isabella and Rasmus Wrana won the gold medal with a 8-4 victory over Team Estonia in the title match; this is the second title for Team Sweden (2019). Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten won Team Norway's second-straight bronze, defeating Team Switzerland 6-5.

Congratulations to the medalists! Complete results can be found online at worldcurling.org.

They Are The Champions: 2024 Women's Ice Hockey Worlds

Who Won The 2024 IIHF Women's World Ice Hockey Championship?

Picture
The 2024 IIHF Women's Ice Hockey World Championship ended today after competition between 10 national teams since April 3rd in Utica, New York. This was the 23rd edition of the tournament, usually held in every non-Olympic year. And, this was the first time that Utica has hosted, although the United States hosted four previous times (Lake Placid 1994, Minneapolis 2001, Burlington 2012, and Plymouth 2017).

Teams Canada and United States have split the 22 titles, with the Canadians leading 12-10, despite the Americans finishing on top in 2023. Finland, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Czech Republic (Czechia) are the only other national teams to make a podium, with the Czechs earning bronze in the last two editions.

And the Canadians and the Americans met in the final for the 22nd time (2019 the rare exception, when Team Finland made the final), with Team Canada taking the title in a thriller 6-5 (overtime) game to avenge their 0-1 loss in the earlier group stage. In the bronze medal match, the Finns won 3-2 (shootout) over Team Czech Republic to reach the podium for the first time since 2021, and denying the Czechs a third straight bronze.

Congrats to the 2024 medalists! Complete results can be found online at iihf.com.
